Stepfamily, also known as blended family or bonus family, is a family unit composed of two separate families that come together through remarriage or the formation of a new romantic partnership. In a stepfamily, at least one parent has children from a previous relationship, either through divorce, separation, or death of a previous spouse.
Stepfamilies are becoming more common as divorce rates increase and people remarry or form new relationships. According to the U.S Census Bureau, in 2019, about 16% of children under the age of 18 lived in a stepfamily.
Stepfamilies often face unique challenges, such as navigating new family dynamics, establishing new roles and boundaries, managing conflicts, and dealing with loyalty and attachment issues. It takes time and effort for stepfamilies to establish trust, intimacy, and a sense of belonging.
Television shows featuring stepfamilies include The Brady Bunch, Modern Family, and Step by Step. These shows often depict the challenges and joys of blending two families together to form a new and loving unit.
